Elm Wood Primary School energy audit

 1 March 2011

The pupils in year 5 at Elm Wood Primary have helped Carbon Descent carry out an energy audit of their school.

Splitting into groups, the pupils helped us identify the lighting and heating systems, checked for draughts, monitored the temperature of the classrooms and counted the number of electrical appliances in each room. They were also given access to areas they would not normally be allowed in, for example, the kitchens and staff room, to interview staff about their energy usage and habits.

This was a great way of involving the class in the energy auditing process, creating a better understanding of the solar schools project and raising awareness of energy efficiency in the school.

The data collected will now be analysed, and used to determine what energy efficient measures can be made in order to lower the carbon emissions and fuel bills of the school.

"The audits and the final reports from Carbon Descent were spot on and have given businesses a real road map to follow if they want to reduce their energy consumption over the next year."
