Gordon Brown visits our Low Carbon Community

12 September 2008

Ahead of Gordon Brown's unveiling of the £910 million extra for fuel measures, the Prime Minister paid a visit to one of our Low Carbon Community and Echo Action homes. Susan Sheehan of Balham, South London, is a founding member Hyde Farm CAN and has reduced her carbon emissions by a massive 58% over a one year period through a number of energy saving measures and behavioural changes. These included:

  • Buying local and organic food where possible and avoiding the supermarket
  • Not wasting food
  • Applying a better use of the heating controls
  • Installing secondary glazing and draught proofing
  • Not flying for a year
  • Reduced car use

The Sheehan family has now reduced their household's carbon footprint from 11.58t per person per year, to less than 5t.
