LEPT PCT Workshops

Carbon Descent facilitated two Personal Carbon Trading (PCT) workshops for LEPTmembers, funded through the Partner Initiatives for the development of Mobility Management Services (PIMMS) TRANSFER project. The workshops provided an overview of mechanisms to reduce carbon emissions which including carbon taxes, offsetting and PCT schemes, illustrated with real life case studies. A guest speaker from WSP joined the session to explain how they implemented their own ‘Employees Carbon Rewards Scheme' in 2007, effectively a PCT initiative without trading but utilising carbon budgets and rewards. Over 80 staff have taken part to date, reducing their emissions by 10%.

The Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) ran a widely publicised PCT trial from 2006, as they point out in their report ‘A persuasive climate', just under half of the UK's emissions of greenhouse gases can be attributed to our individual actions and the provision of incentives is essential to encourage us to make systematic reductions. In addition to this, WSP found that their scheme provided an ‘Advertising Value Equivalent' of around £600,000 in 2009 and was cited as part of some employees decision to join the company.
